The canonical biography, Shri Gajanan Vijay Granth by Das Ganu Maharaj, describes the Saint's divine presence that transformed Shegaon into a sacred pilgrimage.

The Divine Appearance — Pragat Din

On 23rd February 1878 (Magha Vadya Saptami), Shri Gajanan Maharaj was first spotted in Shegaon by Shri Bankatlal Agrawal and Shri Damodarpant Kulkarni. He was found under a sacred **Banyan Tree** (Watavruksha), eating leftover rice from a discarded leaf-platter (Drona).

He was standing in a supreme state of spiritual absorption (Atmanand/Digambar state), untouched by hunger or social norms. Recognizing His divine aura, Bankatlal immediately understood Him to be an absolute Saint and brought Him home.

"गण गण गणात बोते" — The Mahamantra Maharaj constantly chanted, reminding that God dwells identically in every particle of creation.

Miracles recorded in the Granth

Das Ganu Maharaj meticulously records numerous Leelas (miracles) including:

  • Lighting the Chillum (Pipe): Maharaj lit a clay pipe without matches or fire, simply by setting His supreme energy onto it for a traveler.
  • The overflowing Well: When Bhaskar Patil refused to share water, Maharaj instructed to dig the long-dry well, which instantly overflowed with sweet water.
  • Sugarcane Juice: When some children teased Him with hard sugarcane, He twisted the canes with bare hands, extracting juice instantly for them.
  • Muted Scorpion/Bee bites: Devotees recount standing immune to deadly bee/scorpion stings simply in His calm presence.

Teachings & Lifestyle

1. Non-attachment (Vairagya)

Maharaj lived without any preference for clothing or rich foods, showing that inner peace comes from divine contemplation, not worldly comfort.

2. Radical Equality

He sat with the rich and the outcasts alike, treating every being as a manifestation of the single Divine truth.

The Samadhi — 8th September 1910

Shri Gajanan Maharaj took Samadhi on 8th September 1910 (Bhadrapad Vadya Panchami). Before departing, He promised He would be spiritually alive for all true devotees.

"I am not going anywhere. I am right here in Shegaon for everyone who remembers me with single-minded devotion."
